Cryolipolysis

Cryolipolysis (Fat Freezing) What Exactly Is It?

Cryolipolysis is the scientific process involved in CoolSculpting, the popular non-invasive fat reduction treatment. This procedure stimulates the destruction of fat cells through exposure to precisely controlled temperatures.

Cryolipolysis, which is often referred to as fat freezing, has been scientifically shown to reduce fat areas in the body that are resistant to exercise and dieting. Cryolipolysis results are natural and long-term and are a great solution for stubborn areas like belly fat, love handles, thigh fat, double chins, upper arm fat, and more. Find out more about Cryolipolysis to figure out if this fat-freezing procedure might be right for you.

How Cryolipolysis Began

At Harvard, scientists Dieter Manstein, MD, and R. Rox Anderson, MD, began to develop Cryolipolysis after noticing a reduction in cheek fat in children who sucked popsicles, a phenomenon known as popsicle panniculitis. Dr. Manstein explains the idea behind Cryolipolysis in Allure magazine: “Fat freezes at a higher temperature than water. Think of butter and water in the refrigerator – one is solid, the other remains liquid.”

Using these ideas, Dr. Manstein realized that through the process of exposing fat deposits to extremely cold temperatures, the fat would freeze without harming any of the overlying skin. This happens because skin cells are composed mostly of water, which means they freeze at a far lower temperature than fat cells.

How the Cryolipolysis Process Works

CoolSculpting successfully reduces resistant fat bulges by using Cryolipolysis. In his scientific paper, “Cryolipolysis For Noninvasive Body Contouring: Clinical Efficacy And Patient Satisfaction, researcher Nils Krueger explains how it works: “…[fat cells] are more susceptible to cooling than other skin cells…precise application of cold temperatures triggers apoptosis [cell death] of the [fat cells] which invokes an inflammatory response and leads to slow digestion by surrounding macrophages [the white blood cells that rid the body of waste.]”

In layman’s terms, CoolSculpting uses an applicator to isolate fat cells and expose them to precisely controlled temperatures. These temperatures are cold enough to freeze the subcutaneous fat but not quite cold enough to freeze any skin tissue. From there, the “frozen” fat cells crystallize and that causes the cell membrane to rupture.

Destruction of the fat cell means it will no longer store fat. It also signals that the body can use the lymphatic system to collect the destroyed cells. This natural internal process takes several weeks and culminates once the fat cells leave the body as waste.

Cryolipolysis is similar to liposuction as it actually removes fat cells from the body. A big difference is that Cryolipolysis triggers specific metabolic processes to get rid of the fat cells. With liposuction, a tube is used to suction the fat cells out.

The fat-reduction results of Cryolipolysis are dramatic. Nils Krueger’s study showed a 25% reduction in fat after a single session. Since the fat cells leave the body and cannot regrow, the result of fat-freezing is long-term.

How Do I Know If Cryolipolysis is for Me?

To receive the dramatic, long-term CoolSculpting results laid out above, it is important to make sure you are a good candidate for Cryolipolysis. This fat-freezing procedure is best used for the reduction of localized fatty areas on those who are active and healthy but still have issues with areas that are stubborn against dieting and exercise. Cryolipolysis is not a weight-loss procedure and is not intended for those who are obese.
